Just Kiddin'

This is my blag- not a great blag, but it's my blag and I love it.
(smooches blag) with photos and haiku and stuff.

Feel free to add your own haiku.

believe

believe- the catch word of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

I'm not quite sure what it is they would like us to believe in.
Winter maybe- at least it was chilly this morning. All those people
wearing their Olympic red mittens were happy I am sure.

Who would not like to start each morning with a parade?
All the local schools started either early and walked to the
parade route as a group or late allowing the kids to go with friends or family.

I will call this next picture - CHEESE!

102_3538cropped.jpg picture by kidmagnet

No roads closed for this short fast moving procession.
However any traffic that preceded or followed the torch troupe
moved in a one way direction with them.

'cept for this guy. The cop ran him back to the corner and
off the route. It was funny- almost looked set up.

102_3521cropped.jpg picture by kidmagnet

Stilt walker- most of my pictures turned out terrible.
My camera continual froze (new camera time!!!???)
forcing me to remove and reinsert the battery.
This one however turned out awesome
!

102_3503cropped.jpg picture by kidmagnet

Finally the torch! Another camera reboot and some blurry pictures!

With the opening ceremonies only three days away
(well two by the time I post this)
All we need is... SNOW!

  • Feb-10 - Higgette (higget)Yayy!! That was cool! The torch arrives in B.C.! After it's less-than-glorious reception by a serial killer when it first arrived in Canada. Shudder!!! 'Believe' means 'Believe we'll have enough snow!'
  • Feb-10 - Bawdy Vanda! (bigyawn1)Well, I'm just glad nobody got burned, playing with fire is a serious business. I am also happy that, with all those vehicles and pedestrians, the runner wasn't run over.
Dec-28

Ok yes, it was cold!

...but we still went to the beach.
Centennial beach in Boundary Bay park is an excellent
place to bird watch.
We no sooner pulled on to the little road that leads in
and we were greeted by a great blue heron hunting up some lunch.
He held that first pose for AGES before snapping up a bite!

102_3334cropped.jpg picture by kidmagnet

Pretty soon another prolific inhabitant of the park arrived.

102_3362cropped.jpg picture by kidmagnet

The Great Northern Harrier hawk is a huge hawk
that looks almost like an owl.
With a body size of nearly two feet and weighing less then
a pound, perching on top of this tree was easy.

102_3355cropped.jpg picture by kidmagnet

Walking back into the park we saw another
Harrier parked atop this building.

102_3379.jpg picture by kidmagnet
Altogether we saw three in the park and another on the drive home.
I think in all, we saw 5 or 6 heron both at the beach
and on the drive back home.

The park/picnic area of the beach features a duck pond.

102_3401cropped.jpg picture by kidmagnet

It was a good time for lunch for these guys as well.
102_3384.jpg picture by kidmagnet
This huge group emerged from the pond and started picking up
bugs and worms from the grassy area.

102_3387.jpg picture by kidmagnet
It did not take long for this massive and noisy group to
attract attention from a near by predator.

102_3392.jpg picture by kidmagnet

Bald eagles eat just about anything.
I was REALLY hoping I'd catch him grab a quick bite
but he perched himself in a near by tree...

102_3417cropped.jpg picture by kidmagnet

where he was quickly joined by the local mafia.

Leaves...

leaving.

102_3088.jpg picture by kidmagnet

Look how many are still in the trees!

102_3086.jpg picture by kidmagnet

102_3087.jpg picture by kidmagnet

In that big planter behind Ryan is a Japanese maple.
It can probably live a couple years anyway in that planter,
until I figure out where to plant it.

I plopped it into the center of some old irises.
I SHOULD have dug the irises up ,
kept the young ones and tossed the rest.
But I didn't :)
We'll see what happens in the spring.

  • Oct-29 - happy mzinga day! (Kidmagnet)Today I raked this many leaves again into a huge pile, then brought the 6 little daycare kids out to jump and play in them. Holy peanutbutter- they were in heaven! Then the dads showed up and buried the kids in leaves lol
  • Oct-27 - KariI love your yard. It looks very spacious.
  • Oct-26 - Linda (LRuthers)I love your back yard! We don't rake leaves. Dave runs over them with the mower and mulches them back into the ground.
  • Oct-25 - Bud (BLorimer)It's good to live where we don't have to rake leave any more. :)
  • Oct-25 - FLOWERSUNI don't miss raking the leaves, although we do get some from the neighbor's trees. The trees we have growing in our yard are pretty much evergreen except for a couple of small ones.... Now when I was a kid I loved jumping in those leaves!

They work for peanuts

So Jared had an idea. He set peanuts out in the bird feeder to attract the Steller's jays
and it worked!

102_3049cropped.jpg picture by kidmagnet

He wanted to take pictures too so after I took some,
I drew his attention to the 4 jays raiding the feeder.

He sat still and waited...

102_3081.jpg picture by kidmagnet

He did not have to wait very long!

102_3106cropped.jpg picture by kidmagnet

One more jay.

102_3056cropped.jpg picture by kidmagnet

Anyway, after a while I noticed someone else was interested in the peanuts.

102_3069.jpg picture by kidmagnet

We ended up having 4 jays and 2 crows and
they were moving around so much all the pictures turned out blurry.

The Jays won out no contest.
They did not even have to warn off the crows - the crows just up and left.

But they kept their eyes on the jays....

102_3084.jpg picture by kidmagnet

who had taken their peanuts to the garage roof
of my across the street neighbour.

102_3085cropped.jpg picture by kidmagnet

Between the crows hanging around and the jays
robbing the feeder now of the sunflower seeds
(the peanuts were gone),
the little birds didn't stand a chance.

I was quite concerned about this until
later on in the day when they returned!

  • Oct-27 - KariI just love the picture with the trees and the water. I could look at that forever.
  • Oct-26 - Linda (LRuthers)Absolutely gorgeous! I relly loved them all, but I'd frame that one of the tree in the water... I never heard of Smow berries before.
  • Oct-24 - El Judio BravoBeautiful! Simply wonderful pictures!
  • Oct-24 - Higgette (higget)Pop berries are also known (perhaps correctly, but who cares?) as Smow Berries. The Germans have a name for thaem that translates as 'expoding peas'! I like the shot with the refelction in the water.

Bathing Beauties

We were at Crescent Park in South Surrey today.
These pictures were taken at the 'turtle pond'.
Jared also spied very small turtles but they were too hard to see let alone photograph.

Anyway, while we were taking pictures and looking for the little turtles,
a family came up with bread for the ducks.
It did not take long for someone to set them straight.
There are signs but I guess most people don't read them.
I can't believe people still feed ducks bread!

  • Oct-5 - KarThat makes sense. I never thought of it that way.
  • Oct-5 - happy mzinga day! (Kidmagnet)Mostly it's like junk food- does little for them towards nutrition. And the leftover bread pollutes the water.
  • Oct-5 - KariI loved all the pictures. Why can't you feed the ducks bread? Gosh we have done that here for yrs. Does it harm them?
