For the second week in a row the Steelers battled from an early deficit, but this time it wasn’t enough as the Steelers fell to the New York Jets, 19-16 in overtime at Giants Stadium at the Meadowlands.

The Steelers are now 7-3 and still maintain their hold on first place in the AFC North with a one game lead over the Cleveland Browns.

The Jets marched down the field on the opening drive for a touchdown and then added a field goal to hold a 10-0 first quarter lead. The Steelers tied the game at 13-13 in the third quarter and took a 16-13 lead in the fourth quarter. But the Jets fought back to send it into overtime and Mike Nugent hit a game-winning 38-yard field goal in overtime.

Ben Roethlisberger completed 15 passes for 195 yards, but was under pressure and sacked seven times, while avoiding several others thanks to his elusiveness. The running game never got going for the Steelers, with Willie Parker carrying the ball 21 times for only 52 yards.

Jets running back Thomas Jones carried the ball 30 times for 117 yards, the first time the Steelers defense allowed a 100-yard rusher in 34 games.

The Jets soared to an early lead over the Steelers when they reached into their bag of tricks on the opening drive. Jones got things started with an 11-yard run off the left end. On the next play, Jones took the handoff and then pitched it back to Kellen Clemens for the flea-flicker. Clemens looked downfield where he found a wide open Laveranues Coles to the one-yard line. Clemens hit Chris Baker for a one-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

Roethlisberger got the air game going with an 11-yard completion to Santonio Holmes, and on third-and-eight found the reliable Heath Miller for a 17-yard gain. Quickly faced with another third-and-eight Roethlisberger didn’t have the same kind of luck when he was sacked by David Harris for a 17-yard loss.

The defense rebounded from their rough start on the Jets next series, forcing a three-and-out when Brett Keisel sacked Clemens for a two-yard loss.

It wouldn’t be long before the Jets would strike again, though. Clemens tested the secondary by going deep to Jerricho Cotchery and it paid off when Ike Taylor was called for pass interference, a 41-yard penalty that gave the Jets the ball at the Steelers 35-yard line. The defense tightened up to keep them out of the end zone and Nugent was called on to add to the lead with a 25-yard field goal, putting the Jets up 10-0.

Things got rolling for the offense in the second quarter. Parker rattled off a 14-yard run to the Jets 42-yard line where he was brought down by Hank Poteat. Roethlisberger went deep to Hines Ward, the ball was tipped by Darrelle Revis and Holmes made an incredible catch for a 25-yard gain to the Jets 33-yard line.

Roethlisberger went back to Ward for a 22-yard gain and found tight end Matt Spaeth for a six-yard gain. Roethlisberger capped the drive with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Holmes, to pull the Steelers within a field goal at 10-7.

The Steelers were driving late in the first half, looking to close the lead, but the Jets would deny them. Roethlisberger looked for Nate Washington, but the ball was tipped by Darian Barrett and intercepted by Kerry Rhodes.

The Jets got the ball back at the Steelers 49-yard line and went to work with short yardage plays. They got a big boost from Jones when he avoided blockers for a 26-yard gain to the Steelers two-yard line. Clemens scrambled to take it into the end zone himself, but was hit by Keisel and fumbled the ball out of the end zone, which would have resulted in a touchback.

But the Steelers shot themselves in the foot when Clark Haggans was called for holding on the play, giving the Jets new life. The defense stepped up, stuffing Jones for no gain and then covering in the end zone, forcing a second Nugent field goal and giving the Jets a 13-7 halftime lead.

The Steelers started off the second half moving the ball on the Jets. Roethlisberger had a 27-yard completion to Holmes to the Jets 39-yard line. Parker had a six and three-yard run and Najeh Davenport added a five-yarder. Roethlisberger scrambled up the middle for a six-yard gain and Parker added a six-yard carry to the Jets 12-yard line. The drive would stall there, after Parker was knocked for two and three yard losses and Roethlisberger sacked for a two-yard loss. Jeff Reed was called upon for a 39-yard field goal, to close the lead to 13-10.

James Harrison was able to halt the Jets next drive when he sacked Clemens for a nine-yard loss and give the Steelers another chance to peck away at the lead.

Roethlisberger hit Ward for a 25-yard gain to the Jets 43-yard line. Davenport powered for a 15-yard gain, then rattled off five and six yard gains to the Jets 17-yard line. Roethlisberger, who faced pressure throughout the game, was sacked for a seven-yard loss, setting up third-and-17. Carey Davis got some of it back with a 10-yard scamper. Reed connected on a 33-yard field goal attempt to tie the score at 13-13.

The defense came up big again for the Steelers, holding the Jets off once again after they were driving. Jones started off with an 18-yard gain and added an eight and four-yard run to give the Jets a first down. He was stopped for no gain by James Farrior on the next play. Clemens had a six-yard completion to Brad Smith, followed by a two-yard run by Jones to give the Jets fourth-and-two at the Steelers 31-yard line, where they decided to go for it. A false start pushed them back five yards and Clemens pass to Smith fell incomplete, turning the ball over on downs.

It was an opportunity for the Steelers to take the lead and they weren’t going to be denied. Miller pulled in a 19-yard reception and Holmes had a five-yard grab. Roethlisberger averted disaster on third down when he fumbled the snap, recovered, but threw incomplete to Ward. It was time to go to Reed again, who gave the Steelers their first lead of the game at 16-13 when he hit a 48-yard field goal.

Deshea Townsend came up with a huge interception on the Jets next drive, but they got the ball back fast when Roethlisberger was stripped of the ball and Shaun Ellis recovered and returned it to the Steelers 46-yard line. It was another huge defensive stand for the Steelers. After a short gain by Jones and a completion to Cotchery, Harrison knocked Jones for a three-yard loss. The Jets went for it on fourth-and-five, but blanket coverage by Bryant McFadden forced and incompletion to Justin McCareins.

The Steelers went three-and-out on their next drive, putting the Jets back in control. Clemens hit Baker for 10 yards and then went to Smith for 12 yards. McFadden was called for pass interference, giving the Jets a first down at the Steelers 45-yard line. Clemens scrambled for 15 yards and completed a 10-yard pass to McCareins. Baker pulled in a 14-yard reception to the five-yard line. On third-and-goal Taylor broke-up Clemens pass intended for Smith, bringing on Nugent for a 28-yard field goal to tie the game at 16-16 and send it in to overtime.

Neither team was able to do anything with their first possession of overtime. The Jets got the ball with great field position after Leon Washington returned a punt 33 yards to the Steelers 26-yard line. Nugent sealed the win with a 38-yard field goal.

Steelers come from behind to beat Browns

Steelers come from behind to beat Browns 31-28

The Steelers fought back from a 21-9 halftime deficit, scoring three second half touchdowns, to defeat the Cleveland Browns 31-28 at Heinz Field. The win improves the Steelers record to 7-2 and gives them sole possession of first place in the AFC North. The loss dropped the Browns record to 5-4.

"It is great to get a win against a division opponent this time of year," said head coach Mike Tomlin. "They are a good football team. I am excited for the guys in the locker room today. We had an opportunity to do something today that we hadn’t done and that was to show our mettle and come from behind and pull it out. We did it.

"It was far from perfect, but usually that is the case. I am proud of those guys and the way they stayed true to the plan, trusted each other and finished the game. The reality is we were good enough to win, so we are not going to apologize for style points."

Ben Roethlisberger engineered the comeback with two key third down runs, one for a touchdown and the other to put the Steelers in scoring position at the two-yard line. Roethlisberger finished the game completing 23 of 34 passes for 278 yards, two touchdown passes and an interception. Roethlisberger also had four rushes for 49 yards.

But his biggest play was a 30-yard touchdown run that gave the Steelers their first lead of the game at 24-21. Roethlisberger looked like he was going to slide and go down a few times, but never gave up until he reached the end zone.

"A lot of points I was ready to slide," said Roethlisberger. "I remember I was in the pocket and I heard Alan (Faneca) say, ‘go, go, go, you’re good.’ I started running. I think I surprised the DB as well as I surprised myself. I was ready to slide but I knew I was going to be able to get around him and Hines (Ward) was downfield blocking. When I get close to that end zone, I am trying to get in there. The will to win got me in."

Willie Parker had 25 carries for 105 yards, including a 31-yard carry. Hines Ward had seven receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown, while Heath Miller had five receptions for 71 yards and a score.

Browns running back Jamal Lewis was held to just 35 yards on 16 carries. Browns quarterback Derek Anderson completed 16 passes for only 123 yards and three touchdowns.

The Steelers got off to a slow start on offense, going three-and-out on the first possession when a Santonio Holmes reverse resulted in a two-yard loss.

Anderson went to work for the Browns and after two incomplete passes, converted on third-and-10 when he hit Joe Jurevicius for a 10-yard gain. Lewis rattled off an 11-yard run, but was held to a one-yard gain on his next carry. Anderson was faced with third-and-nine, and found Kellen Winslow for a 12-yard reception. Anderson kept chipping away, converting on another third down with a six-yard completion to Jurevicius.

Anderson capped the 16 play, 71 yard drive, which ate up almost nine minutes, with a four-yard touchdown pass to Winslow to give the Browns a 7-0 lead.

The Steelers marched right back down the field, aided by a 31-yard run by Parker to the Browns 13-yard line. They weren’t able to punch it into the end zone and pulled within four at 7-3 on Jeff Reed’s 28-yard field goal.

The momentum continued to swing in the Browns favor, though. Joshua Cribbs fielded the ensuing kickoff at the seven-yard line and returned it 90 yards to the Steelers three-yard line. The Browns made it count when Anderson found Lawrence Vickers for a two-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 14-3.

Roethlisberger moved the offense down the field with completions to Nate Washington for 11 yards and Miller for 22 yards. But again they had to settle for a field goal, with Reed closing the gap to 14-6 when he hit on a 35-yard attempt.

The defense tightened the reigns on the Browns on their next drive, forcing them to punt for the first time in the game at the 6:41 mark in the second quarter.

Instead of it being a chance for the Steelers to get back in the game, it turned into a break for the Browns. On the first play of the drive Brodney Pool got in front of the pass intended for Santonio Holmes and intercepted it at the Steelers 21-yard line, returning it three yards to give the Browns great field position at the 18-yard line.

James Harrison stripped the ball from Lewis, but Hank Fraley was quick on the recovery for Cleveland. Anderson found Edwards in the end zone, and the play was initially ruled out of bounds. After review it was ruled Edwards had both feet down and the Browns extended their lead to 21-6.

It looked like the Steelers would get right back into the game before halftime as they drove down field thanks to completions to Holmes for seven yards, Ward for 12 yards and Washington for 17 yards. But again they were stopped when they got close. On second down from the five-yard line Roethlisberger’s pass to Ward fell incomplete. Then on third-and-five, all hope of getting the ball in the end zone diminished when Roethlisberger was sacked for a seven-yard loss. Reed came on for his third field goal of the game, this time hitting a 30-yarder sending the Browns into the locker room at halftime up 21-9.

The defense picked up the pace in the second half for the Steelers as they stopped the Browns and forced a three-and-out on their opening drive. Unfortunately, it was the same for the Steelers offense as they went nowhere on their first drive and quickly punted the ball away.

After exchanging possessions again the Steelers finally had the ball bounce their way. Lewis went up the middle for a four-yard gain but was stripped of the ball by Harrison, and this time the Steelers pounced on it. Ike Taylor came up with the recovery at the Browns 38-yard line.

The offense came to life when Roethlisberger hit Ward for a 19-yard completion. On third-and-three he found Ward again, who took it in to the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown, pulling within five at 21-16.

The momentum continued to build for the Steelers. After another strong defensive stop, the offense took over at their 34-yard line. Ward pulled in an 18-yard reception at the Browns 42-yard line. After a false start call on the offense, Roethlisberger had a 16-yard completion to Washington to the Browns 30-yard line. Two incomplete passes put the Steelers behind the eight ball, with a third-and-10 at the 30-yard line. Roethlisberger scrambled out of the shotgun and headed up the middle, not giving up until he crossed the goal line to give the Steelers their first lead of the game. The Steelers went for two and converted when Ward pulled in the reception for the 24-21 lead.

It didn’t take long, though, for the lead to evaporate. Cribbs muffed the ensuing kickoff return, picked it back up and returned it 100 yards for the touchdown, putting the Browns back on top 28-24.

An unfazed Steelers offense took over at their 22-yard line and continued to move the ball. Roethlisberger had back-to-back completions to Holmes for 18 and 15 yards. Roethlisberger then went to Miller for a 10-yard gain. On second-and-seven from the 22-yard line Roethlisberger was sacked for a loss of 11 yards, but got it back with a 20-yard completion to Miller. Roethlisberger came up big again on third down, scrambling for 10 yards to the two-yard line. He capped the drive with a two-yard touchdown pass to Miller, to reclaim the lead 31-28.

The defense didn’t give the Browns room to do anything, bringing pressure and covering the receivers, forcing a three-and-out.

The Steelers tried to run out the clock, but were unable to convert on third down and put the game back in the hands of their defense, who responded but not letting the Browns get too close. With just seconds on the clock Phil Dawson’s 52-yard field goal was short.

Steelers look strong in 38-7 win over th

Steelers look strong in 38-7 win over the Ravens

It was a night of honoring the past as the Steelers recognized their 75th Season All-Time Team at halftime, but the 2007 Steelers were the ones who put on a show in a dominating win over the Baltimore Ravens.

The Steelers remain on top of the AFC North with the 38-7 win, improving their record to 6-2 while the Ravens dropped to 4-4.

Linebacker James Harrison turned in a performance that those before him had to be proud of as he had eight solo tackles, one assist, three and a half sacks, three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and an interception.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger played a phenomenal game, completing 13 of 16 for 209 yards and five touchdowns.

"It’s a great win for us tonight," said head coach Mike Tomlin. "The men just responded to the situation the way we had hoped. We had some outstanding performances by some men. Ben (Roethlisberger), James Harrison of course, those two guys were spectacular, but I don’t want to devalue the team effort. I like the way this football team played tonight and we got the win."

Roethlisberger left the game in the third quarter after going down hard and remaining down for several minutes following a 45-yard completion to Santonio Holmes. Charlie Batch came in for Roethlisberger for a series, and then Roethlisberger returned for one series, before being replaced by Batch for the majority of the fourth quarter.

The defense shut down the Ravens offense, which put up 58 points in two games against them last year, allowing Steve McNair 13 completions for just 62 yards and an interception.

The Steelers defense set the tone by going on the attack early and often, creating havoc for McNair on their first drive. On third-and-13 James Harrison sacked McNair, knocking the ball free and after a battle for it Harrison came up with the recovery to give the Steelers prime field position at the Raven’s 20-yard line.

It didn’t take long for the offense to cash in. As he has done all season, Roethlisberger showed his elusiveness by breaking free from a sure sack and hitting a wide-open Heath Miller in the end zone for the first score of the night, giving the Steelers a 7-0 lead.

Harrison came up big again for the Steelers, this time on special teams. After a penalty forced a re-kick, Ed Reed fielded Daniel Sepulveda’s punt at the 32-yard line and was hit by Harrison, who forced his second fumble of the game. Rookie Lawrence Timmons came up with the recovery at the Ravens 28-yard line.

The Ravens hurt themselves with two penalties, giving Roethlisberger a first down in the red zone. Roethlisberger found Holmes, threading the needle between two Ravens defenders for a 15-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 14-0.

The defense continued to harass the Ravens and on third down Troy Polamalu hit Willis McGahee, forcing a fumble. Anthony Smith came up with the recovery, once again giving the offense a perfect situation to work with.

Roethlisberger went right back to work and on third down went to his right and fired a 30-yard strike to a wide open Nate Washington in the end zone for a 21-0 lead.

Things went from bad to worse for the Ravens when McNair was sacked by Harrison at their own 13-yard line for the second time, forcing a fumble. McGahee recovered, but was knocked for a loss back to the three-yard line, where he was tackled by Harrison. The Ravens couldn’t convert on third and a mile and were forced to punt.

Roethlisberger continued with his hot hand, connecting with Holmes for his second touchdown reception of the game while building a 28-0 lead in the second quarter.

While Roethlisberger was putting on a show on offense, Harrison was all over the field on defense, intercepting McNair and returning it 20 yards to the Ravens 44-yard line.

Like clockwork the offense took advantage of the situation the defense put them in when Roethlisberger threw his fifth touchdown pass of the game, hitting Washington again for a seven-yard score and a 35-0 lead.

The Ravens were able to get on the board late in the first half when McGahee broke free for a 33-yard touchdown run, sending the Steelers into the locker room for the half up 35-7.

It was much of the same from the defense in the second half as they continued to confuse the Ravens and live in their backfield.

The offense got a scare when Roethlisberger went down in the third quarter after a 45-yard completion to Holmes to the eight-yard line. Charlie Batch came in at quarterback, but the drive was stalled and Jeff Reed hit a 22-yard field goal for the 38-7 lead.

The pressure continued to come from the Steelers defense. Harrison recorded his third solo sack of the game when he knocked McNair for an eight yard loss. On third-and-14 Brett Keisel was all over McNair, forcing him to unload the ball to avoid a safety.

Roethlisberger returned to action, but the offense wasn’t going anywhere after he was sacked for a five-yard loss on third down.

Batch came back in for the Steelers on the next series, but it ended when Reed came across the middle for an interception and returned it 22 yards to the Ravens 45-yard line.

Notes: Joe Greene served as the honorary captain for the coin toss. Former head coach Bill Cowher was recognized prior to the game to the cheers of the Steelers faithful and was warmly greeted by players on the sideline. Hank Williams, Jr., a loyal Steelers fan, sang the National Anthem.
