My newest passion...

I wasn't sure I would like camping when we bought our camper last year.  But I LOVE it!  Of course, we have all the amenities.  TV, Microwave, stove, oven, refrigerator, full bath, queen size bed, dinette and outdoor kitchen (as well as outdoor shower if we camp near a lake and don't want to track sand in the trailer.)

This picture is from last year, but we are going again in August to the same campground.  It has full hookups (water, electric, sewer - so we don't have to go to the dumping station, WiFi, Cable)  Last year they even had karaoke.  I'm hoping they have it again this year.

Some will say "That ain't camping!"  Ha!  It's a travel trailer, and it's at a campground.  So as far as I am concerned, it IS camping!

Concerts in the park

HippieFest Concert
The little town where I grew up has a summer concert series in the park that is named after the old train station there - that probably hasn't operated in 100 years. The kick-off concert was by a local band that plays songs from the Woodstock era and everyone dresses up for the occasion. Here is Roger and I with our hippie look. This is pretty much how I dressed in junior high and high school ;-)

Hmmm...will this be my new blog home?

Xangatanic
In my last blog, I mentioned that I have a place where I blog that gives me more control over who can see my entries. That place is in the process of closing down if they can't raise enough funding by July 15. So I may be back here to do my blogging. I'll just have to be more careful, since if there IS a way to control who can read here, I don't know about it. (I just haven't kept up with Delphi's bells and whistles)

Been a while!

Me holding our 2013 Trophy
I don't update here very often because I have another blog elsewhere.  But it is kind of private, so I consider this on my 'public' blog.

So... I still haven't learned to play guitar very well, but I still aspire to being at least capable enough to accompany myself singing, since it seems many people look down on karaoke as 'not real singing'.

And speaking of singing - my chorus again took first place in our division at our regional competition and 4th place overall (up one from last year!)  At the time of our competition, we were in 2nd place internationally in our division, and if we remain in the top 5, we will be invited to the international competition.  The last two times we went to international, we came in second place - INTERNATIONALLY!  We were beat out both times by a chorus from Sweden.  So that made us the highest ranked small chorus (15-30 members) not just in the U.S., not just in North America, but in the whole Western Hemisphere!  We are waiting for the final results.  The regional competitions ended this past weekend and before these, we were still in 3rd place internationally - and there were only 4 more choruses to compete, so unless 3 of them knocked us down, we will be going to international :-)

Oh, another reason I wish I could play guitar better is because Roger and I are going camping this weekend and taking our guitars.  I will have to take music because I can't play without it.  But I do want to participate.  Someone once told me if I could learn three chords (G, C and D7) I could play pretty much any piece of 'rock' music.  I guess they were right because I found a book of songs that only use those three chords LOL That is the easiest 1, 4, 5 combination to play on the guitar, maybe with the exception of playing in E-minor.  But I'm still struggling with bar chords and playing in other than the first position.  And of course, I don't practice much, so I'm not going to get better by just wishing I was better.

Hmmm... in other news - I've lost 35 pounds so far, and have gotten my diabetes so much in control that in the last year my A1c has been between 5.9 and 6.2 consistently, and I've dropped my insulin from over 200 units a day to just 20 units at bedtime, and our goal is to eventually drop that number down to zero.

I still check into Delphi daily - mostly just looking in on my Healthy Living forum, but on rare occasions, I get curious and follow promotions.

Didn't just "make it"!

Me with Trophy!
I auditioned for the chorus in February and was accepted :-)  In April we went to our regional competition and took first place in our division and fifth place overall :-)  This picture is of me holding our chorus trophy.  Now Roger calls me his trophy wife :-)

Martin GuitarI am also taking guitar lessons.  I recently bought myself a CF Martin guitar with a narrow body.  My Washburn accoustic was too wide for my arm to comfortably fit over.  I've had problems in the past with frozen shoulder and no longer have 100% range of motion.  My new guitar has a black matte finish.

For Valentine's Day, Roger bought me an Epiphone electric guitar.

With the Classical guitar I bought for taking classical guitar class at the local community college, that makes four.  I guess I had BETTER learn to play!!

"If I cannot fly, let me sing."
-- Stephen Soundheim - Sweeney Todd

I've been alive over 50 years so far.  Life's been very good to me. What more can I ask?

I grew up in a small town in Michigan and never saw railroad crossing gates until I was 14 years old.  Our house was next to a big field where we would hunt berries in the summer and pull each other on sleds in the winter.  I went to a small-town high school and graduated barely into the top 1/3 of my class although I had the smarts to have been class valedictorian.  Silly me, I thought school was my social playground!

After high school I worked various and sundry jobs, never a career until I got my first computer.  I fell in love and found my career path.  I worked my way through the ranks starting as a data entry clerk until eventually I ran the I.T. Department of a fairly large trade association in Chicago (80 employees, 35,000 members) and had the best staff anyone could want. I returned to school and got my associate's degree in computer science (accidentally - an advisor told me I qualified for four certificates - Java, C++, Visual Basic and Database Management - and if I took a speech class I'd have all I needed for an associate's degree.  So I took speech and graduated with a 3.92 gpa in June 2004)

Meanwhile, the company I worked for got a new CEO who brought in his own people, then hired a consultant to tell him that there were too many duplicate positions so recommended that either I or the other I.T. manager should be let go.  Well, since the other I.T. manager was the guy he brought in, I was let go.

I have since returned to school to get my bachelor's degree in Business Administration.  I finished in December, 2006, graduating with honors, and immediately found a position in a Chicago philanthropic organization as their Director of Technology.

I joined Delphi in 1994 originally after spending a couple of years on services like GEnie, NVN (both out of business) and CompuServe before coming to Delphi.  Delphi turned out to be the service that I liked best, so I stuck around - mostly playing in a games forum and hanging out in chat.

In August 1998 I went looking around on Delphi for a forum that dealt with health and fitness without being tied to some product, and couldn't find any (plenty of weight watchers, jenny craig, etc. but nothing that was totally unrelated to any product) so I opened my own forum and called it
Healthy Living.

I learned HTML and became one of the first certified webmasters in 1997.  I wanted to teach anyone who wanted to learn HTML so I opened up charhtml in 1999.  Unfortunately, due to time constraints, I had to close it in 2007.

I spend most of my off time playing World of Warcraft.  My favorite weekend activity is going to karaoke.  I'm currently living in Michigan with my new husband and old high school sweetheart, Roger.
