There were reasons that Israel was sent into captivity and lost their identity.  They did not completely expel and remove the occupiers of the land, but allowed themselves to be influenced by their pagan neighbors and to follow after false gods.

This is found in the book of Judges chapter 1 and in 2-Kings  chapters 17 and 18.

2Ki 17:7  And it happened because the sons of Israel had sinned against Jehovah their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods,
2Ki 17:8  and walked in the statutes of the nations whom Jehovah cast out from before the sons of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which the nations had made.
2Ki 17:9  And the sons of Israel secretly did things that were not right against Jehovah their God. And they built high places in all their cities for themselves, from the Watch Tower to the fortified city.
2Ki 17:10  And they set up images and Asherahs for themselves in every high hill, and under every green tree.

The tribe of Judah who have returned to claim their rightful covenant lands, modern political nation named Israel, still suffer from their refusal to gain their destiny and remove the fakestinians, called palestinians.

The very name Palestinian is derived from a  Latinized version of the name Philistine.
As has been noted by others support for the Palestinians is usually a cloak for hatred of the Jews.
