The headline on Drudge this morning:

MURDERED GORILLA SEEN 'PROTECTING' CHILD

This one headline demonstrates several things that are wrong with so much in American culture and our worldview:

1) A gorilla cannot be "murdered." It is an animal. Murder can only be done to a human being.

2) The life of a human being has far greater worth than an animal's, as demonstrated by several passages in the Bible, such as:

Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
(Matthew 6:26)

When an ox gores a man or a woman to death, the ox shall be stoned...
(Exodus 21:28)

For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish.
(1 Corinthians 15:39)

3) The gorilla was a wild animal, not a trained pet. The child's life was in immediate danger. The gorilla may have intentionally or accidentally killed the child at any moment. Immediate action had to take place to ensure the safety of the child from a wild beast.

Drudge's headline and the response of so many who are mourning the death of the gorilla rather than celebrating that the child was saved has revealed how our culture has in many ways lost sight of the value of human life. We kill babies in the womb. We kill people who we think don't have "quality of life," whether it is the indigent who require expensive treatment, the elderly who don't want to live anymore, or those who are just tired of living. We have elevated the value of animal life to where many times the safety and health of human life must be sacrificed to protect certain species of animal life. In this case, we hear many people angry over the fact that the gorilla was killed rather than taking a far more risky action for the child by tranquilizing the animal.

We have forgotten that we human beings are made in God's image. We are of far greater value than animals to the God who created us. And we think it's virtuous to risk the life of a child made in God's image to save the life of a gorilla?

That is a sign of a culture who has lost their fear of God. A culture who has no love of man who God made in His image. A culture who has come to love the creature more than his creator (Romans 1:25).

What is the cure for a culture that has lost it's way? The Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is only in knowing who God is and who we are as His highest creation that we can have the wisdom to do what's right in every situation. To know that a child's life is more valuable than a gorilla's is a no-brainer to us who love God and know we are made to glorify Him, not the animals He made for us.
