Flash Gordon has become the most recent Sci-Fi channel original series to disappoint in the ratings. After starting strong with a 1.5 premiere rating, the series ended its run in early February, and only managed a 0.75 household rating. That's the lowest rating for a full season of a Sci-Fi original in at least four years. While Sci-Fi has yet to make an official announcement about Flash's future, but it would seem to be extremely unlikely that it will be picked up for a second season.

Sci-Fi has been looking for replacements for Stargate SG-1 which ended last year, and Battlestar Galactica, which begins its final season this spring. Flash Gordon is just the latest in a string of ratings disappointments for Sci-Fi's original scripted series, though its had some success with reality shows like Ghost Hunters. Painkiller Jane aired last summer, but only averaged a 0.82 rating, and was cancelled. It would seem Sci-Fi might've miscalculated when it cancelled The Dresden Files last year. The series averaged a 1.23 rating last winter. That's better than all of Sci-Fi's original series in the last year except Eureka (1.63) and Battlestar Galactica (1.36).

While other shows haven't performed much better than Sci-Fi's recent cancellations, that hasn't stopped the channel from picking up more. The third season of Doctor Who earned an 0.85 rating last summer, and Sci-Fi has picked up the fourth season of the BBC series for this spring. The fourth season of Stargate Atlantis is currently airing. The first ten episodes of the season averaged only a 1.05, easily the lowest ever for Atlantis. The six that have aired this year have ticked up however, and have averaged 1.18 rating. Sci-Fi has already ordered a fifth season of Stargate Atlantis.

What do you think of Sci-Fi's recent original series? Does the channel need to pick its projects better, or have the ratings not reflected their quality? Click the link below to discuss.
