The lead contaminated water crisis in Flint, Michigan is receiving increased national attention-yet what the people of the Rust Belt city urgently need to receive is clean drinking water. Republican Governor Rick Snyder on Thursday offered a second apology for the crisis, saying it's an "unfortunate situation."

Gov. Rick Snyder requested President Obama to declare both an emergency and an expedited major disaster for Genesee County as a result of ongoing emergency water response efforts in Flint. Snyder requested supplementary federal aid in the form of Individual Assistance and Public Assistance to help eligible residents and state and local government entities to protect the health, safety and welfare of Flint residents.

For three months, families in the former auto manufacturing hub of Flint have taken their children for blood tests and lived on bottled water after doctors found high levels of lead in the bodies of the community's youngest people.
