Give It Away

Posted by TorahLovr

Recently , I showed The Gaither Vocal Band - Give It Away. It’s always a bit iffy to show a music video, because musical tastes are so subjective. But everyone seemed to like it.

I liked the video ( I love Barbershop/Gospel Quartets) but I was a little disappointed in the fact that David Phelps was no longer a member of GVB. He has an amazing voice, so I was really looking forward to hearing him.

But he’s not on this video.

His replacement was a guy named Wes Hampton. Who has a nice enough tenor voice, but he’s no Dave Phelps…

The baritone, Marshall Hall, has a really nice voice. Maybe even better than Mark Lowry’s. Sorry, Mark.

The music was good, I particularly liked the song “I Catch ‘Em, God Cleans ‘Em.” I thought there was a bit too much fluff added. Though some of it was funny. The personal interviews with Marshall Hall and Wes Hampton were good. But I don’t really need to watch the guys horsing around on a fishing boat.

I give this video three stars. It could have been better, but for what it was… it was enjoyable.

Legacy of Love

Posted by TorahLovr
I took a concert video out last week:  David Phelps - Legacy of Love.   Dave Phelps has an amazing, incredible voice.

If you're not familiar with him, take a listen to this.

This isn't the version you'll see on Legacy of Love.  He doesn't sing the acapella bit at the beginning.  I love this song. It has an awesome message. In it, he does an incredible octave change that absolutely blows me away.   If you are a singer, you know how hard this is to do, and he does it with ease, and apparently, without breathing!

Four stars!

The Gospel Road

Posted by TorahLovr

I’m not sure what I thought The Gospel Road was going to be about. I think I must have thought it was going to be about Johnny Cash’s conversion, but it wasn’t. It was a retelling of the Gospel story, set to a background of various songs, mostly by Johnny Cash. Which isn’t a bad thing. I do enjoy his music.

The most memorable thing, for me, was the very dramatic scenery in the first 15 minutes or so. The movie was shot in Israel, and they stayed almost entirely away from anything modern looking. From that aspect, it was very interesting.

I’m sorry to say that was the only thing that really held my interest. The man who played Jesus, was such an odd choice. I did a little research and found out that his name is Robert Elfstrom, and he also directed the film. I looked to see if I could find a picture of him, but I couldn’t find anything online. So I’ll try to describe him to you: he was big, blonde, very nordic looking with the hair and beard of Grizzly Adams.

It wasn’t Dan Haggerty, but he looked very similar.

The movie itself was very slow, and just was hard to follow. I’ve never seen the Gospel story done in such a boring manner. And it’s not that there was anything wrong with it, it just seemed kind of cold and lifeless. I guess if you start with a “Jesus” that’s wrong, the whole thing just falls apart.

Still, it might be worth it to see for the Israeli scenery and the JC tunes.   Two stars.

League of Grateful Sons

Posted by TorahLovr

This week, we watched The League Of Grateful Sons.   It is a documentary movie about the men of World War II, specifically the ones who took Iwo Jima.

This is definately a guy movie.  Not that I didn’t enjoy it, but I don’t think it spoke to me on the same level as it did the guys.  This movie really examines the importance of men’s roles in the lives and history of their families.  It brings out a time in history when men were MEN, and they were the strength and protectors of our families and our nation.

I recommend this movie, it had a great message.  And I learned stuff I didn’t know about Iwo Jima.

Three Stars.

Messiah Revealed

Posted by TorahLovr
This isn't a movie review, but it is important.   I was looking for one of my all time favorite websites today, and it was gone!  The domain name now belongs to someone else, it's in Japanese, so I don't know what it's being used for now.

Because the info on the old site is too important to lose, I went to the Internet Archive and made it into a PDF file and uploaded it to my website.  If I can track down the old owner, I will ask permission, or perhaps even offer to host the old site.  If you happen to know the owner, please contact me.

Messiah Revealed: Over 300 Messianic Prophecies and their fulfillment.

Beyond The Gates

Posted by TorahLovr

Beyond The Gates is  about the genocide that happened in Rwanda in 1994, specifically what happened at the Ecole Technique Officielle.   In many ways this movie reminded me of Schindler's List.  It was a very difficult movie to watch.

As I was previewing it, I was trying to find the message in the movie.  It finally comes about 20 minutes or so from the end.  Without spoiling the movie, the Catholic Priest, Father Christopher, decides to stay with the villiagers.  He says that he had been wondering where God was in all of this.  But he finally realized that God was where He always is, with the suffering people.  Father Christopher realizes that if that's where God is, that's where he needs to be too.  Because if he leaves now, he doesn't believe he'll ever find God again.

This is a tough movie to watch, but I think it's important.  Four stars.  But have a box of tissues handy.
