I’m not sure what I thought The Gospel Road
was going to be about. I think I must have thought it was going to be
about Johnny Cash’s conversion, but it wasn’t. It was a retelling of
the Gospel story, set to a background of various songs, mostly by
Johnny Cash. Which isn’t a bad thing. I do enjoy his music.
The most memorable thing, for me, was the very dramatic scenery in
the first 15 minutes or so. The movie was shot in Israel, and they
stayed almost entirely away from anything modern looking. From that
aspect, it was very interesting.
I’m sorry to say that was the only thing that really held my
interest. The man who played Jesus, was such an odd choice. I did a
little research and found out that his name is Robert Elfstrom, and he
also directed the film. I looked to see if I could find a picture of
him, but I couldn’t find anything online. So I’ll try to describe him
to you: he was big, blonde, very nordic looking with the hair and beard
of Grizzly Adams.
It wasn’t Dan Haggerty, but he looked very similar.
The movie itself was very slow, and just was hard to follow. I’ve
never seen the Gospel story done in such a boring manner. And it’s not
that there was anything wrong with it, it just seemed kind of cold and
lifeless. I guess if you start with a “Jesus” that’s wrong, the whole
thing just falls apart.
Still, it might be worth it to see for the Israeli scenery and the JC tunes. Two stars.
